We Will Rock You- the smash hit musical continues to wow audiences at the Dominion
Theatre where it has clocked up record numbers since it opened back in 2002. This is a truly blockbusting west end show, boasting more performances than any other to appear at the 2,000+ seat theatre, and in the final week of 2008 it saw more people pass through its doors than any other show for any other week for the whole of that year.
The hit musical based around the songs from Queen from Ben Elton features over 25 classic songs and sports a truly original story of a future where freedom and music are banned.
The original idea behind "We Will Rock You" first came about in the mid 1990s when Jim Beach the manager of Queen considered putting on west end a musical production. By 2000 comedian and writer Ben Elton had been approached and asked to write the copy for the show, with musical collaborations from Roger Taylor and Brian May and so We Will Rock You was born!.
What sets "We Will Rock You" apart from numerous other shows based on the hits of famous bands is that instead of making the show all about 'the Queen story and merely going through their back catalogue of hits, Elton has penned a unique and bizarre story set in a dystopian future 300 years away where globalisation is finally complete and the earth has been transformed by the authoritarian Globalsoft Corporation into 'Planet Mall'. On Planet Mall everyone must conform to strict orders with the evil Killer Queen ruling all. Every citizen must act, think and even dress the same , with freedom of musical expression strictly prohibited under her dictatorial control. Most people on Planet Mall adhere to this way of life, fearful of reprisals from the Company - because if you step out of line you will inevitably be brainwashed until you conform.
With such an oppressive rule on Planet Mall a rebellion is inevitable as not everyone wants to conform in this way. Enter the Bohemians, a group of freedom fighters who believe in free thought and of course, freedom of music. Amongst the Bohemians are Galileo and Scaramouche, who prophesise a return to the Golden Age, a period in history they call the "Rhapsody".
They embark on a quest, alongside Pop and avoiding the watchful Ga Ga cops, hoping to find a special guitar known as the "mighty axe of the Hairy One". It will not be an easy journey and one that will pit them up against the evil Killer Queen.
Along the way, the audience are treated to renditions of classic Queen hits such as "Another One Bites The Dust", "Don't Stop Me Now", "I Want To Break Free","Play The Game", "A Kind Of Magic", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Hammer To Fall", "Radio Ga Ga", "Who Wants To Live Forever", "Under Pressure", and the title song itself the classic anthem- "We Will Rock You".
"We Will Rock You" continues to draw in the crowds at the Dominion Theatre and is as popular as ever looking set to grace the west end stage for many years to come- We Will Rock You Rocks!
