Priscilla Queen Of The Desert first opened on the west end stage in March 2009 at the Palace Theatre and London audiences have been enjoying the colourful and camp antics of a lovable group of characters in the Australian outback with an array of memorable songs mixing with a compelling storyline ever since. Since opening in the west end, Priscilla has featured a host of top stars including Jason Donovan from 2009 to early 2010 and Oliver Thornton and the show has been playing to a packed house night after night.
The story of Priscilla follows a unique group of characters - Tick, Bernadette and Adam - who put on a renowned drag act in Sydney. Used to the bright lights and colourful personalities of the big city, but they are also up for a challenge and change of scenery so they decide that they will take their show out of its comfort zone and on the road to perform it at a casino in Alice Springs. This adventure takes them on a journey into the Australian outback and it is out there driving in a clapped out tatty old bus called 'Priscilla' that they find love and friendship as well as seeing some of their most precious dreams become a reality.
The story is based on the original 1994 movie Priscilla Queen Of The Desert starring the likes of Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce which won an Academy Award. The stage musical first became a reality and opened its doors in Sydney in 2006 and originally featured some of the actors who would subsequently take the show to London, including Tony Sheldon as Bernadette, whilst performers like Jason Donovan were drafted to guarantee large crowds would flock to the Palace Theatre.
Although Jason Donovan no longer features in the show as drag queen Tick, Priscilla still features a talented team of performers amongst its line-up and it is likely that the production will continue to turn many heads well into the future.
Priscilla features classic disco diva songs including "I Will Survive", "Don't Leave Me This Way", "Downtown", "What's Love Got to Do With It?", "I Love the Nightlife", and "Shake Your Groove Thing" which get the whole crowd singing along giving the ultimate feel good factor and the show is set to continue to camp up and delight west end audiences for a long time to come.
