Petticoat Lane in east London is where the city's once thriving lace markets were situated, and Charlie's Dead cocktail bar and restaurant is a stylish venue named for the phrase 1920's flappers used to use to cryptically tell each other their petticoats were showing in male company. The lace theme is continued inside, with delicate spider-web style graphics on the menus and giant black and white canvases showing women lifting their skirts - yet the rest of the dining room at Charlie's Dead is crisp and contemporary. Amongst the pale sage green walls, designer chairs and wooden floors - a hip east end crowd gather to enjoy the Italian-influenced English menu, and the restaurant is perfect for discreet business meals.
