December Theatre News from BmyConcierge

  • 6 Dec 2010
All the latest theatre news and special offers from BmyConcierge

At this time of year, when we're all starting to get into Christmas mode you can't beat a great family trip to the theatre. This year we have great savings on seasonal classics such as THE SNOWMAN at The Peacock Theatre, THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS playing at The Ambassador's and CBBC's Dan & Jeff in POTTED PANTO, making that family trip to the theatre even better value!

Also now available are the Christmas favourites THE NUTCRACKER performed by The English National Ballet, THE GRUFFALO, THE CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR at The O2 and CHRISTMAS WITH LEE MEAD, ensuring they'll be no shortage of entertainment for all the family in and around the West End this winter.

Highlights amongst our non-seasonal special offers through December include great rates on a number of new openings such as Michael Ball's producing debut - LOVE STORY (1/3 off until Christmas Eve), 48% discounts on ringside seats for LA SOIREE,  and equally huge savings on FLASHDANCE, which, despite posting early closing notices this week has been popular with our bookers since it opened in early November.

On the play front, amongst the best bargains to be had can be found on Oscar Wilde's AN IDEAL HUSBAND now playing at the Vaudeville and THE RIVALS, new at The Haymarket and starring British television personalityand national treasure Penelope Keith.

And of course there plenty of bargains to be had with mainstays such as BLOOD BROTHERS, CHICAGO, DIRTY DANCING, DREAMBOATS & PETTICOATS, WE WILL ROCK YOU and PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT offering their usual great value with offers valid through December and beyond.

So as I have mentioned above, after having been open for less than a month, the latest resident of The Shaftsbury - FLASHDANCE - THE MUSICAL has given notice of early closing and will now shut up shop on January 15th. Victoria Hamilton-Barritt and Co will be replaced by the musical adaptation of Cornish writer, Daphne du Maurier's novel - REBECCA.

Having premiered at The Raimund Theatre Vienna, this German language musical with book and lyrics by Michael Kunze and music by Sylvester Levay opened in Austria back in 2006, and has already played across Eastern Europe, Japan and Skandinavia

The English translation will be directed in London by Michael Blackmore following translation from Academy Award winning translator Christopher Hampton.

The shows plot, which adheres closely to the original novel, revolves around Maxim DeWinter, his new wife, and Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper of DeWinter's estate, Manderley who resents the young woman's intrusion into the world she shared with the first Mrs. DeWinter, the glamorousand mysterious Rebecca, who perished in a drowningaccident. The music ranges from close choral scoring with a rising rhythm section from the pit to power ballads.

Joining REBECCA in The West End in the New Year as it transfers across the Atlantic to the Noel Coward Theatre will be MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET - a musical dramatisation of a now famous impromptu jam session which took place at The Sun Recording Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The recordings made on that day by four legends of American rock 'n' roll - Elvis Presley, Jonny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins have now passed into rock n roll folklore.

Finally in some Wizard related cast news, it has recently been announced that roles of Dorothy's companions in THE WIZARD OF OZ -The Tin Man, The Lion and The Scarecrow will be filled by: Edward Baker-Duly (GONE WITH THE WIND, WEST SIDE STORY), David Ganly (CHICAGO , THE FULL MONTY), and, Paul Keating (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) respectively.

Meanwhile over on the other side of the land of OZ, WICKED announce last week that Mark Evans will be joining the show as Fiyero to work opposite Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman from February 7th 2011. Evans has most recently been starring as 'Curly' in a major UK tour of Oklahoma! And was a runner up on the BBC's Eurovision - Your Country Needs You in 2009.

So that just about wraps up this latest monthly update, all that's left is for me and everyone at BmyConcierge.com to wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Islamic New Year or any other holiday you will be celebrating in December!!

Happy Theatregoing!
