Knight in Memphis
24 Feb 2014Soul star Beverley Knight takes centre stage in Memphis the Musical......
The award winning Broadway smash hit Memphis the Musical is on its way to London at last and will open in the West End in October this year. It has been announced that the lead role of budding singer Felicia has been taken by British soul legend Beverley Knight.
Memphis the Musical is loosely based upon the true story of Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips who made his name in the 1950s as one of the first white DJs to play black music. It is about the paths taken by club singer Felicia and DJ Huey, as they journey towards stardom or failure, and the relationship between them that was doomed from the outset because of the attitudes of the day. The whole world, it seemed, was against them.
In 2010, Memphis the Musical reaped in four Tony Awards out of its eight nominations including: best musical, best book of a musical, best original score and best orchestrations. It also won four Drama Desk awards, out of its seven nominations, for outstanding musical, outstanding actress in a musical, outstanding music and outstanding orchestrations.
Previews of the show will begin 9th October 2014 at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
