Football’s Coming Home
12 Mar 2014Elton and Webber’s The Beautiful Game returning to London......
When the undoubted writing talents of Ben Elton are combined with the musical genius that is Andrew Lloyd Webber, you can expect something special to be produced. Fans of both were not disappointed when The Beautiful Game enjoyed its first successful year-long London run in the West End 12 years ago.
Set in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s, with The Troubles as a backdrop, The Beautiful Game is about two teenagers, John and Del, who play for a football team from a Catholic area coached by a priest, Father O’Donnell. If the team are ever going to make a go of it then star player John will have to forget about the girls on the sideline and the rest of the team will have to forget that Del is a protestant. As the communities around them splinter and the fires of Nationalism and Unionism are lit, will the team survive?
A hit with audience and critics, the musical was awarded the prestigious Best Musical Award in the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards. Now The Beautiful Game is making a return to London and will be playing at the Union Theatre, Southwark from Wednesday 3 April to Saturday 3 May 2014.
